CNN lists News Corp as having a market capitalization of around $18B. Their 2004 Annual Report lists around $74B in assets. I'm not even close to a financial person, but it sounds like you'd need around $10B to get control of the company - assuming you could wrest control of it from all the major investors, deal with leap in stock price when news of a takeover attempt broke and thwart whatever Rupert would do to retain control of his empire.
$1K from 10 million netroots progressives? And it would be an investment, not a donation, so when all is said an done, you'd still have the money for retirement.
Oh, if Ted Turner could just get CNN back :+(
